ORIGIN
Kolkata
Derby is the oldest derby played in India. Mohun Bagan is one of the oldest
existing club of India having been established in 1889 in the city, Calcutta
and till date one of the two most successful clubs in India, the other being
East Bengal Club. The significant British influence in what was, until 1911,
the nation's capital, ensured the game flourished, drawing players from other
regions, and it is against this backdrop in which today's rivalry took root.
In 1920, the
Jora Bagan club took field against Mohun Bagan who chose play without their
star halfback Sailesh Bose, much to the chagrin of club vice-president Suresh
Chandra Chaudhuri. Such was the industrialist's displeasure, he decided to form
a new club and East Bengal was born. As Chaudhuri and his co-founders hailed
from East Bengal, essentially now modern-day Bangladesh, the club is now
generally supported by people who migrated from that region. This resulted in
the clubs being backed by two different socioeconomic groups, although this has
largely changed over period of time. The first ever clash happened on 8 Aug
1921 in Cooch Behar cup which ended in a goalless draw. The first ever league meeting happened on 28
May 1925 in the Calcutta Football League at the Mohun Bagan Ground where East
Bengal won 1–0 with the help of Nepal Chakraborty.
UMAKANTO
PALODHI
The highest
margin of win in the Kolkata derby is the famous 5-0 victory of East Bengal on
30th September 1975 in the IFA Shield final. Shyam Thapa (2), Ranjit Mukherjee,
Surajit Sengupta and Subhankar Sanyal were the scorers for East Bengal and
Ashok Banerjee was the skipper of the Red and Golds. Umakanto Palodhi, a Mohun
Bagan supporter committed suicide after the 0-5 loss in 1975. His suicide note
read –
“In my next
birth, I will take the revenge by becoming a Mohun Bagan footballer.”
Salt
Lake Stadium Attendance- 1,31,000
The
Federation Cup 1997 semifinal witnessed the madness of the city reach its
all-time high as 1,31,000 supporters came to the Salt Lake stadium to watch the
derby. East Bengal won the match 4-1 with Bhaichung Bhutia scoring a hat-trick,
while Najimul Haque had scored the other goal. Chima Okorie scored the
consolation goal for the Green and Maroons.
ISL
East Bengal,
which was recently acquired by Shree Cements, bid for a place in the top league
in the country and will be joining its traditional rival Mohun Bagan, which
merged with the ISL champion ATK earlier this year. This completes the
admission of the two legacy clubs in the country’s elite league, much to the
joy of millions of fans and supporters each of them commands.
