The “ICC Awards of the Decade” is a one-off
edition of an award ceremony which celebrates the great performers on the 22
yards throughout the last decade. In the ceremony, Virat Kohli won Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Male
Cricketer of the Decade. In
order to win the title, he had to beat his fellow nominees Ravichandran Ashwin
(India), Joe Root (England), Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka), Steve Smith (Australia),
AB De Villiers (South Africa) and Kane Williamson (New Zealand).
Virat Kohli: The Legend
The announcement of the names of winners from
some other categories raised a few eyebrows, but in this category, there was
hardly any doubt. The current Indian captain was a clear and obvious choice for
this award. He has made some phenomenal
records in the last decade, some of them were unthinkable before. His
performances throughout the last decade took himself to another dimension as he
is now mentioned amongst the greatest batsmen of all time. Statistically, no
other current player is even close.
Virat
Kohli was born on 5th November, 1988. He first came into limelight
by captaining the Indian U-19 side to a World Cup victory in Malaysia, 2008.
Later he was given his senior international debut at the age of 19. Although he
failed to make his presence felt at first, he slowly cemented his place in the
Indian batting line up which had the likes of Sehwag, Tendulkar, Gambhir,
Yuvraj and lots of budding young talents. What followed, is one of the greatest
cricket careers of all time. He made centuries on a regular basis and later, he
was made the captain of Indian team after MS Dhoni stepped down. Big boots to
fill, but he also did that perfectly. Aggressive on the field, a specialist in
run chase, and tipped to break the record of most international runs and
centuries, set by the great Sachin Tendulkar.
The Records:
Let us look at
some of his records last decade:
1. Virat Kohli
has made 12,040 runs in ODI cricket, more or less 6,300 odd runs behind Sachin
Tendulkar (tops the chart with 18,426 runs). He has played 212 ODI matches
less.
2. Virat Kohli has made 20,396 runs in
the decade, which is 5,775 runs more than anyone else. He is also the first and
only batsman to score 20,396 runs in a decade and the only player to score
10,000+ ODI runs in a decade.
3. He has
50+ average in all three formats simultaneously, not many batsmen has achieved
that.
4. He scored
94 half centuries and 66 hundreds in International cricket last decade, which
is miles ahead of the second person in the list.
5. He has taken
the most number of catches, scored the most number of boundaries and won the
most number of Man of the Match and Man of the Series awards in International
cricket last decade.
6. He has
already won 9 ICC Awards, the most by any player in the history of the game. He
is also a World Cup winner and the captain of ICC Test Team of the Decade.
Also, he’s the only player to feature in the Team of the Decade of all three
formats.
Looking at the records, anyone can easily
tell that he is by far the best player in the last decade. These numbers are
not only the best in last decade, but one of the greatest in the history of the
game. We wish that our national team captain goes on like this, breaking
records and winning matches and Championships for India.
