Divyansh Singh Panwar: From PUBG to Prodigy

Need some PUBG-motivation? Here’s one for you. Current world no. 1 in 10m air rifle shooting has deep connection with PUBG. And he is one of the major medal hopes for India in Tokyo 2021.

Shooting is going to be the biggest prospect for India in this edition of Olympic Games, no doubt about that. India has topped the overall medal tally of ISSF Shooting World Cup events in 2019 and also topped the medal chart of the recently concluded World Cup held in New Delhi after the Covid-19 gap. In the large squad of glittering names flying to Tokyo, Divyansh Singh Panwar is surely one of the biggest hope.

Introduction through Records:

Divyansh from Rajasthan, who recently smashed world record of 253.1 score in National Shooting Trials is only 18 years old. And guess what, he holds the World Junior Record in men’s Team Event too, with the score of 1875.3 shot at 2018 ISSF Junior world Cup in Suhl teaming up with Hriday Hazarika and Shahu Tushar Mane. Wait! We haven’t finished yet! In that very same World Cup, he and Elavenil Valarivan suppressed the world junior Record in Mixed team event also, scoring 498.6. Looks like he is breaking World Records for fun!

Glories with Gun: Career:

He has got three World Cup Medals of different colours in individual event: Bronze in recently concluded edition at New Delhi, Silver in 2019 Beijing and the Gold coming from 2019 Putian edition.

Apart from one Gold in that record breaking Men’s Team Event, all the rest and major number of his medals came in Mixed Team Event. Two Gold in Munich and Beijing and a Bronze in Rio de Janeiro World Cup pairing with Anjum Moudgil in 2019. The same year saw him bagging the Gold in Putian pairing with Croatian Snjezana Pejcic. In 2018 ISSF World Shooting Championships in Changwon, he joined Shreya Agarwal to win bronze in Junior category. And here comes Elavenil, the one with whom he is most probably going to team up in Olympic. And both being no. 1 in the World Ranking of their respective gender category, surely we can dream big in this edition of Olympics where Mixed Team Shooting events are introduced for the first time. The duo won Gold in this latest edition of World Cup too along with that glorious Junior World Cup triumph in 2018. Golden dream in both the categories from him is what Indian Shooting fraternity is praying for. Hope! Hope!

The PUBG Addict:

Well, there’s a buzz that Divyansh’s father Ashok Panwar sent his son to train shooting at Karni Singh Shooting Range in Delhi under Coach Deepak Kumar Dubey to control the PUBG (a popular online combat game) addiction of Divyansh at the age of 14. His father told after he won silver in Beijing and thus qualified for Tokyo, “Like most teenagers, he wasted time playing PUBG rather than focusing on his training or studies and I would often scold him. But I tell you, after winning the medal today, he would have played a round of PUBG.” Well he does play PUBG till now, “I don’t understand why people complain. It helps me relax and I can have some fun as well. My coach and my father do complain that I sometimes overdo it though, so I end up hiding my phone sometimes.”

Lockdown and postponement of Olympic:

For many of those who were in tremendous flow before COVID-19 pandemic spread out, all that followed afterward had high chance of dropping their momentum. But for Divyansh, though his training has been hampered like all the many others, this delay has acted in his favour. As he had his board exam of XII standard just prior to the initial dates of Olympic. So now he does not have two things to balance and can focus fully on Olympic podium finish.

His coach Deepak Kumar Dubey set up a temporary shooting range for his student in his house so that Divyansh can keep his training going. Well, his performance in New Delhi shows that all those dedication has not gone in vain.

Now it’s just that we wish he keeps this show on and all his daily meditation pays off and with all the self-belief and motivation he collects from the Bhagavad Gita pocketbook which he always carries with him, he makes the whole nation proud in Tokyo.
