Boxing was always an important sport for the Indian Olympic team as boxers like Vijender and Mary Kom have shown India the way for success in this sport. India now has the opportunity to upgrade in this sport and this will be valuable for their medal count. Boxer’s like Vikas Krishan and Simranjit Kaur are our other prospects among many.

Amit's Road to Boxing Sport:

Amit Panghal, the Haryana boxer was born on 16 October 1995 in Mayna village of Rohtak district. Vijender Singh Panghal his father was a farmer in Mayna and his elder brother, Ajay Panghal, a former amateur boxer worked in the Indian Army. Ajay was his brother’s inspiration in 2007 at Sir Chhoturam Boxing Academy.

Road to International Glory:

Panghal won the gold medal in his debut appearance at the National Boxing Championships in 2017. He then won the bronze medal in the light flyweight category of the 2017 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Tashkent in May 2017, and qualified for the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships, where he was defeated in the quarterfinal by Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan.

In February 2018, Panghal won the gold medal at the Strandzha Cup in Sofia. He then continued to win. The silver medal at 2018 Commonwealth Games in the light flyweight category and in April 2019 he won the Gold Medal at Asian Boxing Championship.

I think that bout was my best till date. It changed a lot for me.” Panghal said after defeating Hasanboy there.

Amit Panghal in February 2019, successfully defended cup by winning consecutive (2018, 2019) gold medal at the Strandzha Cup in Sofia.

On 21 September 2019, he became the first Indian boxer to win silver medal at the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Panghal lost to Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan in 52 kg category final by 0-5, settling with a silver medal.

Road to Olympics:

Panghal in March 2020 qualified for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after defeated Philippines' Carlo Paalam in the 52 kg quarterfinal. In December, Panghal won a gold medal in Boxing World Cup 2020 held in Cologne, Germany. He was also given a walkover by his opponent Argishti Terteryan from Germany.


It will be the first Olympic appearance of the Indian boxer.

Being the World no. 1 in 52kg weight class, India and Indian Team will be putting high hopes on him to clinch a medal in Tokyo Olympics.
