Boxing was always an important sport for India in Olympics as it has produced Olympic medals for the nation more than once, be it Vijender and Mary Kom. India now has the opportunity to upgrade in this sport and this will be valuable for there medal count. Here we will be taking a close look to one of the important members of the team, Satish Kumar.
From Army to
Boxing:
Satish
Kumar, a UP boy is the first Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics in the
super heavyweight category. He was born to a farmer in Bulandshahr on 4 May, 1989. He wanted to join the army
like his elder brother did. He said, “At the Kumaon (regiment), there are very
few heavyweight box and it was my size that convinced my coach and seniors to
throw my name into the mix. Had it not been the army, I wouldn't have been a
boxer today.”
Past
Glories:
Satiosh Kumar is an Asian Games bronze-medallist (2014), a Commonwealth
Games silver-winner (2018) and a two-time bronze-winner at the Asian
Championships (2015 and 2019). He qualified for his maiden Olympics in Tokyo
later this year by making the semifinals of the Asia/Oceania Qualifiers in
Amman, Jordan.

would be my first Olympic Games, I don’t have words to express how happy I am.
Add to this, I am the first Indian super heavyweight to qualify for an Olympics.
Wow! That’s quite something,” Kumar told PTI in a telephonic interview from
Amman.
Sathish
Kumar is one of the best boxers in India
and Indian Team will putting high hopes on him to clinch a medal in Tokyo
Olympics.
